These days are are literally hundreds of Website Hosting Companies in every country, so you are spoilt for choice when it comes to choosing the perfect hosting company. What's more is that while prices of everyday necessities are going up, the price of hosting on the other hand keeps on going down. So, to find an affordable hosting company today is not as difficult as it was 5-10 years ago.

While price is not a factor anymore, there still are other factors to consider before you sign up with any hosting company.

Important Considerations:

These items were listed in order of importance:

  • Server Location: One of the key factors of SEO is the server location of your website. It is therefore vital to choose a hosting company who can offer hosting in the country of your target market. For example make sure to host your domain in South Africa if you have a .co.za domain, in the UK if you have a .co.uk domain, in the USA if your target market is over there, etc.

  • Microsoft or Linux Hosting: The type of hosting you need depends on what kind of development language or database you want to use with your website.

Choose a Linux Hosting account if you're going to use PHP, Ruby, Perl, Python, or CGI scripting. Most Linux accounts use a MySQL database. If you plan on using a CMS or web application to blog, podcast, or create a shopping cart, check to see what language the developers used to create the application.

Choose a Windows Hosting account if you're going to use ASP or ASP.NET. Windows hosting customers typically use a SQL Server (MS SQL) or Access database. If you plan on using a Web application to blog, podcast, or create a shopping cart, check to see what language the developers used to create the application.

  • Customer Support: There is nothing more annoying than to have a critical issue with your website and you have to hold 5 - 15 minutes to get through to a support technician. Before buying a hosting package, test out a few hosts by calling their technical support centre to see for yourself how long the hold time is.

  • Product Offering: With the Internet constantly changing it is important to choose a Hosting Company whch offers a wide range of products.  Should you need to upgrade at any time, or need extra features added to your hosting package it shouldn't be necessary to move to another host simply because they do not offer certain products / features.

  • Uptime: You need to find a host with a 99% uptime guarantee and exceptional 24/7 support.

  • Special Offers: Some companies offer a discounted rate if you pay upfront for a year.  This can be a good thing if you trust the Hosting Company, but if it's a new host and you are unhappy with their service after a month or two, you will lose out. Rather opt for a slightly higher monthly fee at first, until you are comfortable to pay discounted annual fees.

  • Contracts: Avoid long term contracts. You must be able to cancel a hosting package with 1 month's notice.

I am currently hosting with more than 8 different hosting companies all over the world and can honestly say that I have minor issues with all of them. Do not get me wrong, they are still the best, those companies I found totally unprofessional and impossible to work with I cancelled. Featured below is a list of hosts and a quick review based on my experience with them:

For Hosting and Domains in South Africa:

Imaginet
Customer Support   10/10
Product Offering   8/10
Customer Care   10/10

While Imaginet has a limited product offering they have excellent customer support and customer care, THE BEST!!

Gridhost
Customer Support   10/10
Product Offering   8/10
Customer Care   10/10

Fairly new host, great prices, great support, excellent choice for Wordpress and Joomla sites.

Web Africa
Customer Support   7/10
Product Offering   10/10
Customer Care   8/10

Average holding time on a support call is 5-10 minutes, support via Email also not acceptable with responses only after 24 hours (besed on my experience over 10 years). Other than that Web Africa is great!

Mweb
Customer Support   7/10
Product Offering   10/10
Customer Care   7/10

What I totally hate about Mweb are their contracts / company policies. If you want to move your domain away from them it takes up to two months!!! With most ISP's it take 2-5 days. Cancelling with MWEB is a total nightmare.

For Hosting and Domains in the USA

Host Gator
Customer Support   10/10
Product Offering   10/10
Customer Care   10/10

Go Daddy
Customer Support   10/10
Product Offering   10/10
Customer Care   10/10
